NovAtel’s SPAN™ technology tightly couples the OEM precision GNSS receivers with robust Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) to provide reliable, continuously available, position, velocity and attitude – even through short periods of time when satellite signals are blocked or unavailable.

When combined, the two navigation techniques augment and enhance each other to create a powerful positioning system.  The absolute position and velocity accuracy of the GNSS is used to compensate for the errors in the IMU measurements and the stable relative position of the INS can be used to bridge through times when the GNSS solution is degraded or unavailable.

SPAN-CPT-7™

SPAN-CPT-7 is a compact, single enclosure GNSS+INS receiver, powered by NovAtel’s world-class OEM7® technology. Capable of delivering up to centimeter-level accuracy, customers can choose from a variety of positioning modes to ensure they have the optimal level of accuracy for their application.

The IMU contains a high performing and highly reliable Honeywell HG4930 Micro Electromechanical System (MEMS) IMU to deliver leading-edge NovAtel SPAN technology in an integrated, single enclosure solution. It provides tactical grade performance for unmanned vehicles, mobile mapping and other commercial and/or military guidance applications.

The IMU components within the SPAN-CPT enclosure are comprised of Fiber Optic Gyros (FOG) and Micro-Electromechanical System (MEMS) accelerometers, maximizing price/performance value. FOGs offer exceptionally long life and stable performance compared with other similar gyro technologies.

SPAN-IGM™

igm gps imuThe smallest and lightest of NovAtel’s SPAN® products, the SPAN-IGM series of Micro-Electromechanical Systems (MEMS) inertial sensor products provide two options for developers looking to integrate a high precision positioning system, capable of continuous navigation in difficult or GNSS-denied environments.

The SPAN-IGM Series includes the IMU-IGM-A1 MEMS enclosure and the SPAN-IGM-A1 GNSS INS enclosure. By leveraging the powerful SPAN technology, both of these products are ideal for applications that are the size and weight constrained but still require highly precise position, velocity, roll, pitch and heading.

The IMU-IGM-A1 enclosure houses a small MEMS inertial sensor. The IMU-IGM-A1 can be configured from the factory as an integrated GPS/GNSS Inertial Navigation System (INS) or as a standalone IMU sensor for pairing with a customer’s existing NovAtel SPAN enabled OEM6 receiver.

The SPAN-IGM-A1 enclosure combines NovAtel’s OEM615 GNSS receiver card with a MEMS inertial sensor in the same unit. By integrating the MEMS IMU with NovAtel’s industry-leading OEM6 GNSS/INS SPAN engine, advanced positioning options such as AdVance® RTK, ALIGN® heading technology and RAIM are available to maximize performance.

The SPAN-IGM-S1 features Sensonor’s STIM300 MEMS IMU, a compact, high-performance sensor with centimeter-level accuracy. Combined with NovAtel’s OEM615 receiver, the SPAN-IGM-S1 offers exceptional performance in a small, lightweight, all-in-one package. This product is commercially exportable and provides the best price/performance/size available in the market.
